Spring 2017 Hall of Commitment

We will be celebrating with the graduating seniors of Sigma chapter on Sunday April 30, 2017 with a brunch and the Hall of Commitment ceremony.  Please join us at 12:30 at the Sigma Chapter house at 828 E Washington in Iowa City.  We will begin the ceremony at 1pm, followed by a brunch provided by the alumnae chapter.  Be sure to attend this wonderful event that we all look forward to each year.

Founders' Day 2016: A time to reflect and celebrate!

October 15, 1885 was a beautiful fall day on the DePauw University campus.  Even though we are not completely sure of the weather forecast that day, for Alpha Chi Omegas everywhere, the day was beautiful because it was the day our beloved fraternity was founded by these seven women who we honor each year.  The scarlet and olive chosen as the fraternity colors and our Symphony are  heartwarming reminders to Alpha Chis that we have a heritage that is worthy of remembrance.

This year we will celebrate the 50 year membership of some of our Sigma sisters with a 50 year pin ceremony that will be held at the chapter house at 828 E. Washington in Iowa City on Saturday, October 15, 2016.  All alumnae and collegiate members are cordially invited to attend the ceremony which will begin at 10:30am.  We will host a small reception after the ceremony, and also celebrate the fraternity by watching the current collegians' videos from recruitment this fall.  A Domestic Violence Intervention Project presentation will also be given and members and alumnae are encouraged to bring any of the following items to donate to the local DVIP:

1. Pillows

2. Baby Bottles

3. Conditioner

4. Baby Formula

5. Laundry detergent (HE and regular)

6. Used cellphones, with chargers

7. Travel size ibuprofen and tylenol

8. Womens' underwear size 7-10

9. Pull-ups for children

Fun Kickoff for Fall 2016!

It was a tiny but mighty group that got together last night to kick off the new year for the IC Alums.  Karen Daubenberger hosted a salad supper and six other Alpha Chis joined her for a relaxing evening, getting re-acquainted with old friends and meeting new ones.

Sunshine and Sisterhood Convention has everyone glowing!

The biennial National Convention was held in Orlando, Florida from June 24-26 at the beautiful J.W. Marriott Resort.  Several members from our Epsilon Theta Epsilon Alumnae Chapter (Iowa City) attended, as well as members of Sigma Chapter, alumnae and collegians.  The new National President and National Council were elected and they are:

National Council- Jari Askins, Mikelle Holy Brady, Jennifer Daurora, Lynne Biggio Herndon, Jill Sabatino Lacy.
These women will serve the National Fraternity for the next two years.
The next National Convention will be held June 29-July 1, 2018 in Austin, Texas at the JW Marriott.  It is an exciting event and if you have never attended, you should plan now to attend!  It is a great time to learn more about your sisterhood, meet up with old friends, and catch the spirit of Alpha Chi Omega at its brightest!

Hall of Commitment and May Meeting Review

We were delighted to welcome the new alumnae from Sigma Chapter into the Hall of Commitment on May 1, 2016.  The ceremony was attended by approximately 20 seniors and 6 alumnae from Epsilon Theta Epsilon (Iowa City) as well as three members from the Epsilon Chi Epsilon Chapter (Cedar Rapids).  Following the ceremony, we enjoyed a lovely brunch provided by the alumnae chapter and spent time socializing with the collegians and learning their plans for the future.  What an encouragement to meet the next generation of Real. Strong. Women. who are entering into the life-long experience of Alpha Chi Omega!

Following the brunch, we held a formal meeting of the alumnae chapter.  Minutes will be emailed to local members and alumnae.  Here is the tentative calendar for 2016-2017 and the organizers for each event:

Celebrate Hera Day today!

Today we honor the commitment and dedication of our Founders to the principle of service to others by "shed(ding)the light of love and friendship" to those who are in need.  Whether you are an intentional volunteer at a local shelter, hospital or school, whether you are a grandmother who is babysitting or a co-worker who offers a ride, the service we give to others is uplifting not only for others but also for our own spirits.  Reflect on our Symphony today and carry the light with you whatever services you do!

Winter News from IC Alumnae

February 2015:  how did we get this far so fast?  The year has been blurring past, and as this is written, we hope you are warm and snug somewhere.  Whether you are drinking hot chocolate by the fire in Iowa or laying in the sun in your winter location, we hope you celebrate MacDowell month this year by embracing the arts wherever you are.  Take in a performance, spend some time at a local gallery, or cheer on the budding artist in your family.  Our lives are richer and the world is better when we fill it up with the beautiful things art brings to our lives.  Artists come in all different shapes, and sizes and whether its sculpture, music, theatre, or the paper arts of literature and painting, we can "see beauty even in the common things of life" everyday.

Our chapter raised $773.00 for Tiny Hands International this fall, by purchasing beautiful handmade items that support women who have been rescued from human trafficking.  Thank you to everyone who helped support this new philanthropy of our chapter.

We had a great evening of fun and holiday cheer with the women of Sigma Chapter on November 19.  Decorating the tree, and making ornaments was a great way for alumnae and collegians to get to know each other.

To celebrate Hera Day this year, we have been invited to join the Cedar Rapids area chapter for a luncheon on March 7 at the Hotel Kirkwood in CR.  Please plan to attend and RSVP to Jayne Nicholas at janeyn76@gmail.com.  The luncheon starts at 11:30am.

We are also sharing Healthy Relationships Week with Sigma this Wednesday, February 11 from 6:00-8:00pm.  We will be having a booth to make Valentine's Day cards, which the girls can purchase to give to family and friends, or they can make a card to give to someone at DVIP or the Children's Oncology unit at the UIHC.  This event is Wednesday evening.  Contact Sarah Griebahn for more information at 319-621-1777.  Any proceeds will be donated to the Alpha Chi Foundation, as part of our ongoing commitment to support the women of Alpha Chi Omega.

Fall Alpha Chi Alum RoundUp

It's been a great fall for Alpha Chi's in Iowa City! 

     Our Summer BBQ was well attended and we heard the news from National Convention and what was happening at the National level of our fraternity.  There were 9 attendees from our area, including our past National president, Marsha Grady, and Rhonda Warren, Sigma, the Province Alumnae Chairman from Texas.  We were well represented on all levels, as our Chapter Presidents (both collegiate and alumnae), Chapter Advisors, House Director and House Corps President all attended the bi-annual gathering of members from across the country.  The next convention in 2016 will be held in Orlando, Florida--start making plans to attend!  It's a great experience!

     Our alumnae calendar has been full!  We started with recruitment at Sigma, and we want to thank all the members who helped out with food donations and assistance in the kitchen.  Sigma added 46 new members and they will be having initiation November 5-6.  Alumnae are encouraged to attend the ritual ceremony as well as the other events.  Please contact Sarah Griebahn, the Fraternity Relations Advisor, for more details (sgriebahn@gmail.com).

     We distributed Welcome Back bags of goodies to all the returning collegiates--it was a fun project and the girls were very grateful for the treats and personal products that were donated to make this a true gift of love and sisterhood.  We will be looking for donations for the live-in girls to have a Sisterhood Snack Pack for the end of the semester as well (baked goods, popcorn, etc.).  Start thinking of some great ideas to add!

     We also designed a new t-shirt for alums to wear to show their AXO pride.  We even made some new friends and some money for our alumnae chapter!  If you are interested please contact Brenda Griebahn for more information at 319-621-6605.
     We made some attempts to engage our alumnae for Homecoming, but hopefully we will have better response next year!  If you have friends or sisters coming back next year to Iowa City, let us know if this is something they might be interested in doing when they are in town.  We cheered on the Sigma float as it went by in the parade, and enjoyed some Paglai's Pizza for old time's sake!
     We still have 2 great events planned for this fall semester.  On November 19, we will be trimming the tree at Sigma and sharing hot chocolate, cookies and Christmas memories with the chapter at 7pm.  Come out for a relaxing evening and do some Christmas shopping as well!  We will be selling "Tiny Hands" products to raise a awareness of the plight of women throughout the world.  Products made by women from all over the world will be on sale and the proceeds will go to our newest philanthropy to help end human trafficking.  Be sure to join us for this "new" tradition of supporting women in need.
     And last but not least, we have a fabulous Holiday Party planned for December 13.  We will be having a Wine Tasting and Art event at The Secret Cellar, 1205 Curtis Bridge Rd NE, Swisher, IA 52338.  Join us at 1pm for a fun afternoon, relaxing, imbibing in a little wine and snacks, and take home a masterpiece that YOU create under the tutelage of the artist from the venue.  The cost of the event is $29 per person plus $10 for materials.  You must RSVP to Brenda Griebahn (319-621-6605) or the Secret Cellar (319) 841-2172 to attend so we have enough materials for everyone.  You can bring payment that day, or call your credit card to The Secret Cellar.  Ask for Lauren.  More details to follow.  Bring a friend and share the spirit of the season!

It was Hera Day!

March 1 was Hera Day for Alpha Chi's across the country and the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids alumnae got together in the spirit of fraternity to celebrate!  And much like the postal service, nothing could keep these sisters away-neither wind, nor snow, nor sleet or hail!  And we've had it all this year!  Our faithful members MaryAnn Clemons, Anne Dierking, Elsie Foerstner and Dee VanderHoef  joined members from the Cedar Rapids Alumnae group at the Blackstone in Iowa City for a luncheon.

Christmas Holiday Brunch, Sunday December 8

We will be gathering to share the joy of the season with our AXO sisters at a Brunch at the Blackstone Grill on Sunday, December 8 at 12:30pm.  The Blackstone is located at the corner of Scott Blvd and Rochester Ave in Iowa City.  We have also invited the Cedar Rapids area alums to join us.  Husbands/partners are welcome to join us for this informal gathering to start the holiday season.  Bring a Christmas ornament to share in a grab bag gift exchange.  Hope to see you there!  Have a merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

House Corporation Annual Meeting Recap

We had a great group of alumnae turn out for our House Corporation Annual Meeting and Ice Cream Social.  Although we didn't get to meet as many collegiate this year, we met some new alumnae in the area and we want to welcome them!  After a n informal alumnae chapter meeting, the Board of the House Corporation presented the annual reports regarding the state of the chapter house at 828 E. Washington.  We want to thank the board members--including Leslie Soule, Karen Daubenberger, Sharon Kay Stang, Jane Harbit, Elsie Foerstner--for their dedication and hard work maintaining our beautiful Chapter House.

We also want to welcome the new House Director, Karen Hollen.  Karen was raised in Aledo, Illinois and earned her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Michigan State University.  Karen  most recently worked ten years as Housing Director at Alpha Delta Pi Sorority at the University of Michigan, but was ready to move back closer to family with a brother living in Des Moines and a sister in the Chicago area. Karen is very friendly and loves working with college students. We are extremely happy to have her join our family.  Please stop in and say hello to Karen when you visit the house.

If you haven't been an active part of our Alumnae Chapter in the past, or if it's been a while since you kept in touch with us, I want to say "Welcome!" and invite you to join us again.  Start by seeing what we do by attending the Ice Cream Social and Annual Meeting of the House Corporation Board on October 14, 2013 at 828 E. Washington in Iowa City.  The social starts at 6:30pm with the women of Sigma Chapter at the University of Iowa joining us for a fun dessert get-together.  Following the dessert, we will have the Annual Meeting of the Sigma House Corporation at 7:30pm to conduct the business of the Corporation that oversees that physical structure of our collegiates' home at 828 E. Washington St.

Spring Update

Hope you are all having a great winter, wherever you are!  Just a quick update from Epsilon Theta Epsilon:
1.  Don't forget to celebrate Hera Day on March 1, 2013.  Anne Dierking will be organizing a lunch date at the Blackstone restaurant, located at the corner of Scott Blvd and Rochester Ave in Iowa City.  Be sure to let Anne know if you can attend by calling her at 319-351-4525 or emailing her at hawkagd@gmail.com.  We'll be meeting at 11:30am and it will be a great day to meet with sisters and catch up on what's happening.
2.  Hall of Commitment will be held later this spring for our graduating collegiate sisters.  The date and time will be announced soon, and we will need volunteers to bring salads and other brunch foods for the brunch, as well as take an active role in the ceremony.  Stay tuned for more information.
3.  Volunteers for upcoming year.  We need volunteers and new ideas to implement into our program for the next year.  If you have any suggestions, or if you would like to help organize, please email Brenda Griebahn at brenda@writeitdown.org.  Let's have a great program to help get others involved in Alpha Chi!
4.  Special thanks to all the alumnae who are helping out the Sigma chapter in Iowa City.  We have a great team of collegiate advisors who are making a difference in the lives of the collegians.  If you are working with the members at Sigma, stand up and take a bow! 

September Meeting Update

Six alumnae and two collegians met for our first meeting of the 2012-13 year on September 10, 2012.  We enjoyed dessert at Brenda Griebahn's and the business meeting that followed was very well received.  Elsie Foerstner presented the Treasurer's Report:  we had 17 dues paying members last year and our current balance is $654.98.  It was moved and approved to keep our dues at $25 for this year.  Please send your dues to:  Elsie Foerstner, 8 Glendale Terrace, Iowa City, IA 52245.
     Jaclyn Gelman, Sigma president, and Abby Britain, Sigma vice president of Ritual and Fraternity Appreciation gave a glowing account of Sigma's fall recruitment.  The Chapter has over 40 New Members and over 130 in total membership.  Well done, Sigma!
     Those members who attended the 2012 National Convention gave a great report on the state of the Fraternity.  Brenda Griebahn presented the For Now Forever Campaign for the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation, a capital campaign to raise $7 million dollars for membership services, including fabulous new programs being used to train the young women of the collegiate chapters to become the Real. Strong. Women of Alpha Chi Omega.  After discussion, Karen Daubenberger moved to set our alumnae chapter pledge to the Foundation at $500 over the next two years; Sharon Kay Stang second; unanimously passed.
      The program events for the year were discussed and these are the great events we have planned for the coming year:
October 8, 2012:  Founders Day Ice Cream Social sponsored by the House Corporation Board at the Chapter House.  Be sure to attend the Annual Meeting of the House Corporation following the social event with the collegiate chapter.  The ice cream sundae bar will begin at 6:30 and the meeting will follow at 7:30pm.
December 2, 2012:  Holiday Brunch at Cedar Ridge Winery, 1441 Marak Rd NW, Swisher.  12 Noon.  $15.00 per person, includes food plus mimosas.  We are inviting the alumnae from the Cedar Rapids area, and we may extend the invitation to spouses as well.  Look for final details a bit later!  Marsha Grady is our host/organizer.
February 2013:  We are planning an arts event in honor of MacDowell Month.  Hopefully we can attend an AXO collegiate recital or performance, followed by a social hour at a local coffee shop.
March 1, 2013:  In honor of Hera Day, we will meet for lunch at the Blackstone Restaurant at the corner of Scott Blvd and Rochester at 11:30am.  Anne Dierking will be our host/organizer.
Spring Alumnae Dinner at Sigma: Date TBD.  Plan on a fun night with "Hubby HouseBoys" at Sigma Chapter!  Meet the girls of Sigma around the table and relive those college dinners!
May 5, 2013:  Hall of Commitment Senior Brunch, 1pm at the Chapter House.  Brenda Griebahn will be the host/organizer for this annual ceremony for the 2013 graduating seniors of Sigma.

House Corporation Board Update

SIGMA HOUSE CORPORATION NEWS

Fall is coming!!  Sigma Chapter is preparing for Recruitment, the chapter house is full and soon we will have a great group of new members.  Corporation members have spent the summer watering, managing the cleaning crew, window washers, carpet cleaners, inspectors  and making sure that everything is cleaned, screwed, glued and caulked as necessary.   A big THANKS to Sharon Kay and Al Stang and Jane Harbit for helping me accomplish these things. 

Alpha Omega National House Corporation has instituted a three level certification program for House Corporations to help insure that chapter housing is kept up to the expected standards.  We have achieved the lowest level for this year.  Our building passed at every level, we just need to add a few things to our management plan so that we can “Go for the Gold”  or maybe just Silver by 2014. 

As seems to be the norm for the past few years, we are actively recruiting personnel for the board.  Please give me a call if you would like details.   319-351-2727

Fall Get-It-Together Meeting September 10, 2012

It's that time of year--time to get back into a routine with school, enjoy the changing colors and get re-connected with Alpha Chi Omega!  We will be having our first meeting of the year on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 6:30pm at Brenda Griebahn's home at 3590 Utah Ave NE, Iowa City.  We will be finalizing our calendar for the year and dusting off our lyres to let them sing for the coming year.  Dessert will be served to entice you to join us and there will be plenty of sisterhood to fill you up.  Looking forward to seeing you all there!

If you ever wondered why our Fraternity has that slogan, you would understand after attending a National Convention.  I had the pleasure of being at the 2012 Convention in St. Louis, Missouri this summer with almost 1000 women who know that Alpha Chi Omega is alive and well and thriving in America.  What adjectives can I use to describe this 4 day adventure?  Amazing.  Inspiring.  Challenging.  Stirring.  Triumphant.  Awakening.  The theme for this year's Convention "Meet Me at the Arch" was a fitting title as we watched the

soaring structure of the Jefferson Expansion Memorial from our hotel gleaming in the sunshine by day and standing as a beacon shining out in the night sky.  Fitting because the Arch was built using the strongest structural design know to man and the women at this meeting are some of the

strongest women I have ever met.  Our own Marsha King Grady, National President, inspired us with her vision of what Alpha Chi Omega can be to future generations.  Melissa d' Arabian, an Alpha Chi Omega who now stars on The Food Network on her own show "Ten Dollar Dinners" had us laughing and crying with her testimony of the power of sisterhood in her life.  And all the women who are the members of the new National Council, the Foundation and the National Housing Corporation were able to share with us how when we all work together toward a common goal we can be a powerful force for positive change in the lives of women across the nation.  Changing lives, changing the conversation about what being a member of a sorority means in America today.

Oh, did I mention the fun?  Women of all ages, cheering, singing, and learning together.  Not only did we discuss the business of the Fraternity, but there were great opportunities for learning new ways to be involved in Alpha Chi Omega, as well as new things to help individual members grow.  Protecting yourself on the Internet, "The Happiness Project", and discovering the frog within, were just some of the sessions that were available for members to attend and find new Heights to reach for.  We all came away with great new ideas and the revival of ideals that we want to share with our alumnae chapter and a recommitment to engaging with our beloved collegians at Sigma.  We were all proud of our Sigma President, Jacklyn Gelman, as she received the honor of wearing the Centennial sash for the Chapter, and we were so excited to see Molly Schuneman, Sigma, serving as a page at the Convention.

If you have never attended a Convention before, I want to encourage you to try it--you're going to love it!  The convention is open to all Alpha Chi Omega women, and is held every other year in various locations around the country, so there may be one close to you in the future.  The 2014 convention will be held in July 2014 in Palm Desert, California.  I can't wait to see you there!

Hall of Commitment Brunch at Sigma

Whew!  Where has the time gone! Spring has come and gone and summer is rolling by quickly.     After a long winter's nap and a lot of time in warmer places, our chapter welcomed 14 collegians into the Hall of Commitment at a brunch held at the Sigma Chapter house on April 29, 2012.  A lovely buffet was provided for the soon-to-be alumnae by the members of our chapter and the Hall of Commitment ceremony was performed with the help of all attending.  Alumnae in attendance included Dee Thayer, Karen Daubenberger, Sharon Kay Stang, Jane Harbit, Brenda Griebahn, Anne Dierking, Tami Lyvers, and Marsha Grady.

Seniors attending the ceremony were Megan Anderson, Traci Bauer, Sam Debernardis, Daniell Faubert, Kelsey Fillman, Kathryn Gernes, Katie Kluge, Kimberly Laws, Dina Mandell, Morgan Mills, Andi Ricciardi, Lauren Scaletta, and Samantha Westerhof.

We also held a brief business meeting to discuss plans for the next year, our delegation attending Convention in St. Louis and some program ideas for the 2012-2013 year.
